The Church of the Good Shepherd

Snow covered mountains surround Lake Tekapo in the centre of the South Island of New Zealand. These mountains and the turquoise lake make a spectacular background for the Church of the Good Shepherd. In 1935 the Duke of Gloucester laid the foundation stone for the church to commemorate the early pioneers of the area. Clear skies, clean mountain air and beautiful scenery are just a few of the reasons to choose this wonderful venue.

From the beginning of construction it was decided that a feature of the Church was to be a plate glass window behind the Altar. The Church was sited so that this window would give a view of the mountains and the lake and was made available to all denominations. The common heritage of the pioneers transcended denominational barriers even in those early times. The altar in the church is made from one large block of Oamaru stone (a type of limestone). The block was cut to size and beautifully carved by a well known sculptor Frederick George Gurnsey. The figure of Jesus is depicted in strong clear lines and is shown carrying the lamb firmly under one arm rather than over the shoulders. The church is a memorial and is filled with pioneering memories. This beautiful Chapel is a well known landmark in many countries all around the world.
